books (Part 3) # 7

The last part of July for comments on books about a real discovery: Anna Karenina by Tolstoy, promoted to (almost) full marks. With

tavo secretly Tolstoy.
Eastern European writers, the various Bulgakov, Gogol ', Kafka, Dostoevsky, have never been able to do anything but bored with their endless book, full of musings, monologues of endless, agonizing and tedious descriptions, real estate struggles soul ... Perhaps
Bulgakov is a bit 'less "property" of others, but Dostoevsky! I just do not the digest. And I've tried more than once, even, and even with White Nights.

But Tolstoy. This
her novel is everything you'd expect from a classic of that fame, and more.

Arkàdjevna Anna Karenina is a woman who is content to exist.
has a husband who respects but does not like, and a son that she is not important, is intelligent and brilliant, like everyone knows, is a woman of aristocratic world is beautiful: it appears to be, and all that a woman could want.
But it is not alive. Not until, falling from a train that brought her to Moscow by his brother, he meets a young gentleman referred to during the trip he met his mother. Count Vronsky.
"Vronsky went into the car behind to guard the entrance to the compartment he stopped to give way to a lady who came out. With customary tact
man of the world, from a glance outward appearance of this lady Vronsky judged with certainty that she belonged to high society. He apologized and was about to go in the car, but felt the need to look at it again, not because she was very nice, not for that elegance and grace that saw modest in his whole person, but because the expression leggiardo face, when she had passed close, there was something very soothing and tender.
When he turned to look at her, she too turned her head. The glittering gray eyes that seemed to blacks bushy brows, stood amicably, with a focus on his face, as if she recognized him, and immediately brought the crowd as he walked, as if seeking someone. Vronsky had time to notice the restrained animation that flashed on her face and fluttered between sparkling eyes and the faint smile, arching her red lips. As if an abundance of something so close to her, to be expressed outside of his control now in the twinkling of the eye, now in her smile. She had deliberately turned off that light in his eyes, but it shone against his will in barely perceptible smile.
"
(Part One, Chapter XVIII)
Since then Anna is no longer herself, or maybe it is better to say that from that moment that the reader sees discover and become herself , able to penetrate behind the mask firmly in control and brilliance which had begun to know it.
Because despite the appearance, Anna Karenina is a woman full of doubts, who knows how to manage their own existence, but not his own life. The love that Anna tries to Vronsky is a love immature, selfish, which initially makes her shine and shine like a star in the eyes of everyone, including their own. But, as the feeling gets stronger in her, she discovers the weakness, an inability to decide to take the reins of their lives and their own love story inevitably begins to crack, culminating towards the end, in the pages of the highest level and in an order that loomed as a threat since the first appearance of Anna.

Konstantin Dmitrievich Levin is a good man but rather restless, and so, it raises many questions about life, questions that are frantically looking for the answer without losing heart, trial and error after another when a road what has taken reveals a failure:

"The reasoning led him to doubt and prevented him from seeing what you had and what not to do. But when he did not think, but lived, felt constantly in his mind the presence of an infallible judge who decided which of two possible actions to be better and which worse, and as soon as they had not acted, he felt immediately. "
(Part VIII, Chapter X)
Levin is the opposite of Anna and, most of Anna, he is the real protagonist of the story in a way that contrasts, indeed, the history Karenina and Vronsky. Why
Levin is also the protagonist of a romance, shy and awkward as that of Vronsky, who was his rival before he met Madame Karenina, is bright and stylish, but unlike the latter, which fails to contain or to growth in the love story (though Vronsky is not the only one to blame for this), Levin will succeed, because that's what he wanted from life.

What Tolstoy is proposed, and is able to accomplish, in this work, is to represent life.
It succeeds.
I admit, I skipped some boring sections where Levin's search for the meaning of this life in many aspects, from slavery, religion, agriculture, and discuss with other men, trying to focus his thoughts and soul searching for the answer you need (and eventually will, in a crescendo of increasingly intense pages ).
Yet the novel, despite its smallness, is immense.
And if you're going to argue "Smallness? Are no other than 900 pages !"... maybe you have not read it? Try to read it, and then try to tell me if it is not surprising that in only 900 pages there is all that Tolstoy is able to put on this. Why Anna Karenina is not just the story of Anna, Kitty, Levin and Vronsky; around their intertwined stories, equally true, equally varied, with a host of multifaceted characters minutely, minutely described in thoughts and actions, and anxieties and joys that make them no less than of us who read their history, the people who live.
